Carl Gustav Jung (1875–1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and the founder of Analytical Psychology. A pioneer of depth psychology, Jung introduced groundbreaking concepts that reshaped how we understand the mind, the self, and human experience—including the collective unconscious, archetypes, individuation, introversion and extraversion, and psychological types.

Jung’s work explored the intersection of psychology, philosophy, art, alchemy, mythology, and religion. He believed that the path to wholeness involves integrating the conscious and unconscious aspects of the psyche—a journey he called individuation. His ideas continue to influence psychotherapy, spiritual development, literature, and even popular culture.

From his early collaboration and eventual break with Sigmund Freud, to the publication of transformative works like Man and His Symbols, The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, and Memories, Dreams, Reflections, Jung’s legacy has endured and evolved. Today, his theories are studied not only by psychologists and analysts, but by artists, scholars, and seekers from all walks of life.

Jung’s Key Concepts

  • Archetypes – Universal patterns or symbols within the collective unconscious
  • The Shadow – The unconscious parts of ourselves we suppress or deny
  • Anima and Animus – The inner feminine and masculine aspects of the psyche
  • The Self – The integrated whole of a person’s conscious and unconscious aspects
  • Synchronicity – Meaningful coincidences that defy cause-and-effect logic
  • Individuation – The psychological process of becoming one’s true self
